Event description
Employee?s finger is lacerated while climbing suspended gate
Investigation abstract
At 8:30 p.m. on June 12, 2021, Employee #1, working for a cleanup crew at a poultry processing establishment, climbed down into a sunken ice bath chiller approximately 12 feet wide using a ladder. After the cleaning process, the ladder was no longer available, so the employee attempted to climb out by ascending the suspended gates that move the carcasses along. The gates swung when the employee's body weight caused one to open, creating a pinch point. The employee placed his left pinky finger into this pinch point. When the gate swung back, it closed on the gloved finger, causing a laceration and removal of the nail and some flesh. The employee was treated without hospitalization.
