Event description
Employee crushes fingertip while closing heavy metal gate
Investigation abstract
At 10:00 a.m. on May 20, 2021, an employee working in a prison warehouse was closing a large metal gate. The gate, which rolls on a track with a wheel, was difficult to close due to sand and gravel in the track. The employee used his body weight and held the pipe frame of the gate with his right hand as it closed. The gate slammed shut while his fingers were still grasping the pipe frame, causing his right ring finger to be caught and crushed between the pipe and a stop pipe supporting the fence. The employee was hospitalized for more than 24 hours to treat a crushed fingertip injury.
