Event description

Employee fractures leg while cutting tree

Investigation abstract

At 11:15 a.m. on August 9, 2021, Employee #1, an experienced climber and base. He sustained a fracture to his left lower leg and was transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, where he stayed for over a day. arborist, was cutting down a 65-foot Interior Live Oak tree on a property in Grass Valley, CA. He was tied into the tree being cut and attached to an overhanging branch of a nearby tree as a secondary anchor point. Employee #2, the owner of the tree trimming contractor, was on the ground providing instructions. Employee #1 unclipped his body belt from the tree to move lower for the next cut while still secured to the climbing rope tied to the overhanging branch. The overhanging branch unexpectedly broke, causing Employee #1 to fall approximately 20 to 25 feet and land on his feet near the tree's
