Employee Amputates Finger With Pallet Nailing Machine

Investigation abstract

At 12:30 p.m. on October 26, 2021, an employee was operating a Master Recycler Nailing Machine at a wood pallet manufacturing facility. While loading stringer boards into the jig, the board placed in the left side of the runner clump entered at an angle and missed the slot. The employee was holding the board when the operating sequence of the equipment activated the bottom deck to automatically raise into home position, and the employee's right thumb was caught between the stringer board and runner clamp stop. The employee's thumb was crushed and amputated, requiring medical treatment without hospitalization.
