EMPLOYEE INJURES EYE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE DRILL RIG P

Investigation abstract

At approximately 12:01 a.m. on February 11, 2022, an employee attempted to remov e drill rig pipe sections. The employee used a 48-inch pipe wrench to attempt to break the connection between the rig and the pipe. The top part of the pipe rot ated while the bottom remained stationary, with approximately 400 feet of pipe s eparating the top from bottom, creating stored energy in the form of torque. The connection broke while the pipe wrench was still connected, causing the pipe wr ench to strike the employee in the head. The employee suffered loss of eye sigh t and skull fractures. The employee was hospitalized to treat these injuries
