Event description

Employee amputates two fingers while cleaning out masa pump

Investigation abstract

At approximately 1:59 a.m. on November 5, 2021, an employee was conducting a clean out of the masa pump utilizing a water sprayer tool to spray into the machine to clean it. The employee discovered a large piece of corn meal lodged in the machine in-feed. He placed his fingers in the in-feed to dislodge. The pump was running at the time of cleaning since the employee was performing minor servicing (cleaning), the employee's fingers made contact with the paddles. The employee sustained an amputation/degloving of two fingers of the right hand and was treated without hospitaliztion.
