Employee dies of heat related illness building footing forms

Investigation abstract

At 4:04 p.m. on August 28, 2024, an employee working as a construction laborer performing tasks that were estimated to be a moderate workload level. A coworker reported feeling fatigued and having a headache. The employee was walking down the sidewalk after leaving work when he collapsed. The employee later died. for a structural concrete contractor was building footing forms in preparation for a concrete pour. The employee's work shift was 10.5 hours daily, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with a 15-minute break at or around 10:00 a.m. and a 30- minute lunch break at noon. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory starting at 11:00 a.m. for Tuesday, August 27, 2024, until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 28, 2024, stating that heat indices were expected to reach the low 100's (degrees Fahrenheit or deg. F.). At 1:51 p.m., the relative humidity was 50%, the WBGT was 86.6 deg. F., and the heat index was 94.6 deg. F. The employee was
