Event description

Employee is fatally struck by sliding log

Investigation abstract

At 7:00 a.m. on October 7, 2024, a crew was logging a clear-cut unit using a Yoder type yarder. The rigging crew was positioned approximately 400 feet below the landing, standing off to the side. As two logs were being lowered to the ground with the assistance of a shovel, both logs slipped out of the grapples and slid back down the hillside. The yarder engineer blew a long whistle to warn the crew. The crew saw the logs pass by them and looked down the road-line. Employee #1, the Hook tender, was positioned below the rigging crew, hanging ribbon. The crew stated they did not see the employee get hit, but later discovered the employee had been fatally struck by one of the sliding logs.
