CONSTRUCTION EMPLOYEE DIED OF HEART FAILURE

Investigation abstract

AT APPROXIMATELY 9:55 AM ON NOVEMBER 13, 1987, EMPLOYEE. #1 WAS INSTALLING SHEET METAL DUCTWORK IN AN OFFICE CEILING. HE WAS STANDING ON THE THIRD RUNG OF AN 8 FOOR CAROLINA STEPLADDER WITH HIS BACK TO THE LADDER. AFTER ATTEMPTING TO CONNEC T THE DUCTWORK HE BEGAN TO DISMOUNT THE LADDER. HE SLIPPED OFF THE SECOND RUNG, STRUCK HIS HEAD ON THE SIXTH RUNG, AND SLID DOWN THE REST OF THE LADDER. IT WAS AT FIRST ASSUMED THAT THE EMPLOYEE HAD DIED AS A RESULT OF STRIKING HIS HEAD ON THE LADDER. HOWEVER, THE AUTOPSY REPORT SHOWED THAT THE CAUSE OF DEATH WAS A DIS SECTING ANEURYSM OF THE AORTA WITH HEMOPERICARDIUM.
