Event description

Employee amputates fingers in snowblower

Investigation abstract

At 9:20 a.m. on February 2, 1989, Employee #1 was operating a Gilson ST 422 snow blower when plastic strapping became caught in the machine. He turned the machin e OFF, took it into a building, and removed all the strapping. He started the ma chine again, but after a few minutes it stopped. The employee then saw a piece o f strapping in the blower stack. As he tried to pull it out, his right hand beca me caught and his little, ring, and index fingertips and his middle finger to th e first joint were amputated. He was hospitalized until February 5, 1989.
