An employee was in a ditch (approximately 7 feet deep) unhooking a pipe from a backhoe when the ditch caved in from behind. The employee hit his head against the pipe and suffered a fractured skull, head injuries, a broken jaw, a broken left eye socket, possible blindness in the left eye, damage to teeth, and a swollen ankle. He was hospitalized.
