An employee was unhooking the initial hook on a cattle's hind leg. While re-hooking it to another shackle, the cattle's leg dropped down. The slack was not removed from the shackle due to mud and manure. The hook went up, and the employee's right thumb got caught in the shackle, causing an initial avulsion that later required surgical amputation above the first knuckle.
