The injured employee was on the deck of a ship, lashing containers and locking them down to the ship. The injured employee's right hand was resting on a container on the deck. A crane operator was bringing another container onto the deck. The employee's right thumb tip was smashed between the container that was already on deck and the container that was being set in place by the crane.
