An employee was preparing to melt granulated sugar with hot water to make liquid invert sucrose. The employee turned on the drum pump and walked over to the measuring tank to monitor filling. While the employee's back was facing the pump, the pump discharge hose came undone and a discharge of hydrochloric acid (HCl) struck the employee's back causing first and second degree chemical burns.
