An employee was assisting in lifting a metal cart to help support a plastic film roll that weighed approximately 500 pounds. The roll slipped and the employee went to keep the roll from falling using his left hand. The employee's fingers were caught on the cart's metal edge and pinched underneath the roll. His left middle finger was fractured and the left ring fingertip was amputated.
