An employee was using a rope to hoist a broken water pump out of a basement. The pump caught on a ledge. The employee was holding the rope with his right hand and a rail with his left hand, working to dislodge the pump. When the pump came free, the rope pulled taut and contacted his left ring finger. The fingertip was amputated at the last joint.
