An employee was troubleshooting a 3-inch butterfly valve. A faulty solenoid was causing the valve to operate intermittently. The air line was disconnected from the compressor. When the valve was moved from the bench, compressed air in the disconnected air line activated the valve while the employee was holding it. The valve pinched the employee's right ring finger, causing an amputation at the first knuckle.
