An employee was using emery paper to polish a part inside a computer numerical control (CNC) machine. The employee's gloved right index finger was caught by the rotating part, resulting in injury that required surgical amputation of the distal and intermediate phalange sections of the index finger. The machine was in setup mode at the time of the incident, limiting some of the operating features.
