An employee was using a table saw to split poplar wood planks measuring 3 inches wide by 8 feet long. He stopped feeding the material into the saw to reach over the saw for a push stick to finish the cut. His right hand was on the end of the material to hold it in place in front of the saw blade when the board tried to kick upward. He placed his left hand on the board behind the saw blade when the board caught on the spinning blade and pulled the board and his left hand into the blade. The employee's middle and index fingers caught on the blade, resulting in amputations that required hospitalization and surgery.
