Just before the incident the employee was performing normal patient care preparing to assist a patient in pivoting to the bedside commode and retrieving a gait belt.

While the employee was retrieving the gait belt the patient who is flaccid on the right side began to pivot and started falling. The nurse quickly grabbed the patient and sat her on the bedside commode during which the nurse felt a sharp pain in the right shoulder blade and mid back.

The injury was a strain in the right shoulder blade and mid back characterized by sharp pain.

The direct cause of the injury was the physical strain from supporting the patient to prevent a fall.

Strain or Tear L-Shoulder. Pt Contact lifting and Pt maneuvering without equipment.
