Handling sharps wires instruments

I was performing a left arm antecubital needlestick with a 19 Gauge butterfly needle set (comes as part of a PRP kit) to draw 52mL of patients ' blood for a PRP procedure. When withdrawing the needle I went to push it into the safety shield to manually ac tivate to cover the needle hub with my right pointer finger and I thought the needle went into the safety shield because I heard it click however it went to the opposite side of the shield and when I released my finger and pulled away from it the needle popped up and into the distal ventral side of my right pointer finger. I pulled the needle out of my finger immediately and properly clicked it into the safety shield. I cleaned my finger with an alcohol swab as it was closest and then soap and water. I i mmediately reported it to my supervisor who called OCC Health to follow protocol. There were no witnesses of the incident the patient was lying down and unaware of the needlestick.
