Maintenance Technician was in the Maintenance Shop fabricating a housing to guard a pump coupling During that process he utilized a Metabo portable powered cutting wheel to cut approximately a 10 x 18 piece of 3 16 thick aluminum sheet metal out of a full sheet He was leaning into the piece of metal that he was cutting out and holding the body of the Metabo in his left hand and the handle with his right As the cut finished and the piece of metal fell to the floor it is suspected that he released the handle with his right hand and put his right hand forward to steady himself and the cutting wheel contacted his right thumb causing a laceration At the time of the incident in addition to his standard PPE he was wearing leather work gloves safety glasses and a face shield and ear plugs The associate was treated at a local occupational clinic and referred to an orthopedic specialist
