Before the incident
Disconnecting a donor.
What happened
After applying a hermetic seal to the needle line and ensuring my pre-steps for disconnecting were completed I held the gauze over the needle with the side of my left palm and pinched the handle of the needle with my left index finger and thumb; both fingers were pointed toward the donor 's wrist. I pulled the lower part of the needle handle with my right hand expecting the needle to cap as it was removed. I felt a sting in my left index finger and noticed the needle was exposed. I capped and secured the needle before checking my finger; there was a cut in the left index glove and blood on both of my gloves.
