What happened
In walking the bit back to center the bit broke near the chuck of the drill. His hands came down after the break and his hand hit the bit.
Injury or illness
The back side of the bit where it broke off penetrated his hand in the meaty portion of his left palm below the last bone in the thumb. The bit exited the back side of his hand below the bone of the thumb. Puncture clean through no bones hit no nerves hit.
