removing blunt needle from filter tubing system rubber stopper
What happened
[REDACTED] 9369452 to [REDACTED] from OR ~ 2300. Anesthesia in EPIC = [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED]. Assisting patient 's nurse to admit patient post surgery. Noted propofol infusion spiked with vented tubing pump off and not infusing into patient. An 18 g needle found inserted into rubber stopper to needle hub next to tubing spike with propofol dripping out of end of needle. While wearing gloves the needle was removed from propofol rubber stopper and while attempting to activate safety mechanism on syringe needle pierced right thumb. Several drops of blood noted. Gloves removed washed hands and Dr. [REDACTED] (neurocritical care resident on call) patient 's RN [REDACTED] NSICU charge RN [REDACTED] [REDACTED] were notified. To RUMC ED thereafter for follow up. Instructed to follow up with employee health on [REDACTED] [REDACTED].
