What happened

The injured party (IP) was cutting 1 8 stainless steel metal with the site 's [REDACTED] machine using the Shearing function of the equipment. The [REDACTED] has two joysticks to control the functionality of the machine; the control used for the Notcher is within reaching distance if positioned at the discharge end of the shear. The shear 's feed end hold down would not adequately pin the parts in place due to their size. Because of this the IP chose to hold the small piece of stainless at the discharge end and use the Notcher joystick to cut the parts. During the machine cycle the IP 's right index finger was caught between the sheet metal and the working end of the shear.
