Taking patient 's temperature while standing at the side of the crib
What happened
I was standing beside my pt 's crib taking her temperature. I finished taking her temperature and turned to walk away to put the thermometer back on the wall. My foot got caught on the cables for the vital signs monitor (pulse oximeter NIBP EKG leads) that were hanging down the side of the pt 's crib. I tripped and landed hard on my right knee with my right foot twisted awkwardly out behind me. The pt 's mother heard me cry out when I fell and asked if I was okay; I told her I had tripped. I experienced severe pain in my right knee and foot. I had a half assignment that did not require much walking so I finished out the end of the shift but it is now the end of the shift I still have significant pain in my right foot; I cannot walk faster than a slow limp. It 's unclear whether I am dealing with a fracture a sprain or just bruising. Notified charge nurse(redacted) RN and the charge nurse for the day shift (redacted) RN. I have emailed the PICU managers including my manager (redacted) a
