Writer administered heparin injection to pt 's left arm once given writer flipped safety feature upwards and then attempted to straighten out pt 's gown with left hand and needle remaining in the right hand. When adjusting gown writer 's left hand made contact with the needle and writer 's left middle finger was punctured. Writer performed first aid and thoroughly cleaned puncture site then notified the nursing supervisor of the incident.
