Before the incident
I was looking in the medication cart.
What happened
Stick happened at 0840. There was a fabric container bag in the patient 's medication cart slot. I asked the patients primary RN if they knew why it was in there and they did not know why it was there. I picked up the bag and as I lifted it out of the medication cart I got stuck with something in my left-hand middle finger. There is a needle puncture on the finger. This RN stopped touching the bag. I washed my hands and put a bandage on. I then put on gloves and searched for the bag. I found what appeared to be a sewing needle. The Needle was removed from back. Put in a plastic container and fabric back was placed with the rest of pt belongings. Charge RN notified. House coordinator notified. Paperwork filled out and sent to employee health. Labs collected from patient per policy
