What happened
While performing an IV needle stick on the patient I was holding the needle when the patient flinched and moved his arm abruptly. The needle punctured the patient and then immediately punctured my left index finger. This resulted in a dirty needle stick exposure. The puncture site was immediately cleansed per protocol. The charge nurse and house supervisor were notified. Employee health and appropriate exposure protocols have been initiated.
