Before the incident
Preparing the skin with an alcohol swab for the injection
What happened
I had the patient skin pinched to give the lovenox injection. after giving the injection I attempted to activate the safety mechanism to hide the needle. However the patient jerked sideways causing the needle to come out of the skin prematurely. the needle was then thrusted towards the middle finger on my left hand. I felt a small sharp pain. I activated the safety mechanism on the needle and placed it in the sharps container. I then removed my glove to see a small smear of blood indicating that skin was broke.
Injury or illness
