Moving a rare earth magnet for Kettle 15b

What happened

The employee was moving a rare earth magnet - about 8.25 inches in diameter - that was sitting on a parts table near [REDACTED]. The employee was holding the magnet by its edge so that their thumb was on the magnetic side of the magnet. Another rare earth magnet similar in size was laying on the other end of the parts table. The employee moved the magnet they were holding too close to the other magnet on the parts table and the two magnets abruptly came together. The top of the employee 's right thumb was smashed between the two magnets resulting in a crushing injury. The employee immediately pulled their thumb out from between the magnets and went to a supervisor for help. The employee was wearing cotton gloves which are worn when completing this task.

The impact of the two magnets coming together resulted in a crushing injury to the employee 's right thumb. The employee was initially diagnosed with a partial avulsion and open fracture. The employee ultimately underwent a part medical amputation of the top section of their right thumb.
