He was preparing to clear the sprue bushing on a molding machine which was blocked with partially molten polymer

He inserted a long metal rod into the plugged bushing. This released a pocket of air pressure that had been trapped behind the blockage resulting in molten polymer being sprayed into his face.

He had some burning and abrasion on his face initially thinking he had gotten some polymer in his eye but that was later determined not to be the case.
