RN giving infant vitamin K shot which is IM. Infant 1880gms with little muscle available. Muscle needed to be squeezed with the needle to insert at a 45 degree angle to ensure injection into muscle. Infant kicked as needle being inserted into infant 's left thigh causing leg and muscle shift needle entered skin and tissue went through tissue exiting the skin and stuck RN thumb. Needle needed to be retracted out of infant 's thigh exposing infant to RN 's blood body fluid.
