Tank Cleaning

Description: An employee was working in the primary clarifier tank 1 to repair a chain and flight system that had broken. The drive chains consist of oval shaped polymeric plastic chain links about 8 inches in length that are connected together with small cotter pins. During the work the plastic chain was being maneuvered into position to align over a large sprocket and 2 of the links squeezed together and created a pinch point on the employee 's right index finger at the first knuckle. The employee was wearing 2 pairs of nitrile gloves as the work required dexterity in the fingers to maneuver the small pins in and out of the pin holes. Leather gloves would not be suitable for this type of work. There is no written SOP for this work as it is an out of scope activity. The employee believed it was just a pinch as the nitrile gloves did not rip open. After exiting the tank he noticed that there was blood when he removed his gloves.
