Trying to slide up the needle guard on a heparin syringe

I was given a heparin injection and I was sliding the guard on the needle when my finger slipped. The needle punctured the lateral aspect of my first finger on my left hand. I immediately washed my hands for 5 minutes and informed the patient of what just happened. I notified the house supervisor who then brought me all the forms to fill out.
