He was trying to remove a long handled tool from the candle breaker on #3 furnace. The candle breaker had caught the tool while it was inserted into the furnace vapor port.

He was trying to pull the tool out of the riser when he grabbed the pipe handle with his gloved hands. The tool had been in the 2400 degree furnace and was very hot. It burned his hand on contact.

He received 2nd degree burns on the tips of his index middle and ring fingers on his left hand.
