Before the incident
Three Mechanical Maintenance Technicians (MMT) were assigned to replace a tapered bearing on #2 deflector roll on 90 Line. The MMT’s removed the pillow block then lifted the roll with the crane slightly to hold it above the roll stand. While attempting to remove the bearing the MMT’s identified that the bearing and lock ring were ceased on the roll shaft. They attempted to use a pneumatic chisel to remove the bearing but no progress was made.
What happened
The injured employee attached a manual hydraulic bearing puller to the ceased bearing. Once the bearing puller was secured he stood to the left side of the bearing and the puller and used the 14” long handle on the puller to begin pumping it with his left hand. As he was pumping the bearing puller the bearing and the puller dislodged from the roll neck simultaneously causing the bearing puller to strike the outside of his left hand. The employee sustained a mild fracture to the 5th metacarpal.
