Performing surgery without a surgical assist
What happened
Needlestick from the hypodermic needle to inject local to the left third digit. Needle had already been used on the patient. It was immediately discarded.The surgical assist was holding the camera and not at the mayo stand during a laparoscopic appendectomy. The camera in that room had already malfunctioned after getting into the patient 's abdomen and I had to wait several minutes for the screen not to be black while the system restarted. Just before scrubbing into the case I had been paged by the ER in [REDACTED] about a very ill patient that required urgent evaluation and I am not provided any APC support to begin evaluation and management of patients while I am in the OR nor to assist with surgeries. I had used the local needle once prior dropped the cap onto it thought I secured the cap onto it and placed it on the mayo stand. I reached for it again saw the cap was on and then as I moved the local onto the field from the mayo stand I was watching the screen to evaluate my choice f
