Before the incident
Obtaining AM labs
What happened
I was attempting to obtain AM labs on this patient who is intubated and developmentally delayed. When I stuck him initially he jerked his hand away and I attempted to calm him down with therapeutic communication. He was still very anxious and moving his hand. He jerked his hand up as I was attempting to advance the needle further to obtain blood for the samples ordered so I went to remove the needle because the vein had clearly blown and when I did he jerked his hand up again and in attempting to grab his hand to prevent him from trying to grab his ETT I poked myself with the dirty needle.

Superficial needle poke to the dorsalis side of my right middle finger. A small amount of blood was notable when I removed my gloves. I washed my finger under water for 5 minutes using soap immediately after.
