Before the incident
Using a hammer to chip dried concrete off his mixer.
What happened
A ready mix employee was standing in the crow 's nest of the concrete mixer truck using a hammer to chip dried concrete off his mixer. The mixer drum was rotating while he was working. A piece of concrete had broken loose and did not fall off the truck as expected so the employee reached out with his left gloved hand to remove it. His gloved hand was caught between the rotating drum and the Drum Stop Bounce Restrictor bracket at the top rear of the drum. The rotating drum started pulling on the employee 's hand. His left index finger and the digital nerve ulnar side were lacerated. The employee was trying to get loose and yelling for help but no one heard him. The employee finally got loose and climbed down. He went to the mechanic shop 's restroom and washed the blood off his hand for several minutes. The lead mechanic attempted first aid and notified the Safety Dept. The mixer employee was then transported to the [REDACTED] and admitted to the hospital for orthopedic surgery.
