Inspecting the installation of boat motors on pontoons

While checking to connections between Operator console and motor IW had their right hand on the motor propeller shaft to ensure it engaged in gear when operator controls were engaged. Outfitter on boat started motor (by mistake) and engaged controls which caused the propeller shaft to rotate clockwise. IW heard the motor start and was removing their hand when the splines on the shaft hit their right thumb jamming it into their hand and wrist.
