Before the incident
Was in the patient room 211 at patient 's bedside collecting blood. A 23 guage butterfuly needle was being used with a syringe attached. Vein was not located immediately needle was readjusted after initial venipuncture and patient moved her arm.
What happened
When patient moved her arm after the initial venipuncture that did not locate a vein and a second attempt was being had the movement caused the needle to slide out of her arm. The patient was bleeding and direct pressure was applied to stop the bleeding. After this was under control i was attempting to engage the needle guard as the patient bumped my arm which cause me to bump the needle into my left thumb.
