Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
fractures and crushing injuries:
a) Mechanic employees use globe semi-hydraulic, single port, frame
contact lifts to elevate automobiles for service and/or repair.
The lifts are not fitted with automatic mechanical devices to hold
the lift in the fully extended position thus exposing the mechanics
to injury, June 9, 1988.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is to retrofit the lift with automatic mechanical
devices, having a safety factor of 3, to hold the lifts in the fully
extended position at the rated load capacity.
