General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries and/or death from hoist failure and dropping load while employees working underneath: a) Painting and Welding Area - Employees spraying coating and welding straps to frame under frames suspended by two (2) hoists, on or about May 26, 1986. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is the use of metal tack stands under the chassis to prevent the load from falling in the event of hoist failure.
