Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees: a) Machine Shop - Employees in all areas where lifting and/or pulling and/or pushing are required were exposed to body mechanical (musculoskeletal) injuries. A feasible and useful method to correct the hazard, among other methods, is the periodic, comprehensive training and supervision of all employees in body mechanics, manual lifting and team lifting techniques and in the utilization of lifting and movement assistance devices. STEP 1: Implement a training program in body mechanics and lifting techniques for all employees exposed to the hazards as an interim measure. STEP 2: Submit to the Area Director a written detailed plan of abatement outlining a schedule for the implementation of engineering and/or administrative measures to control employee exposure to injuries as referenced in this citation. The dates for the following actions which are consistant with the abatement dates required by this citation: a) Evaluation of the conditions, locations, and activities the employees are engaged at the onset of the injuries. b) Evaluation of applicable control measures. c) Periodic training of employees in the applicable control measures. d) A monitoring method to assure effective utilization of the control measures. STEP 3: Correction shall be completed by the implementation of the detailed plan of abatement.
