GENERAL 5A1 WORDING Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falling loads: a.Employees lift steel by jib cranes, and the Steel Shop had a two ton wall crane pendant operated and jib rated at two ton. A three ton hoist was attached to the jib. b.Employees lift steel by jib cranes, and the Storage Track (overhaul) had a pendant operated crane (10T Hoist) with Jib not rated, or pendant marked with directional for operation of crane. c.Employees lift steel by jib cranes, and the Storage Track (overhaul) had a pendant operated crane (7 1/2T Hoist) with Jib not rated. d.Employees lift steel by jib cranes, and the Storage Track (overhaul) had a pendant operated crane (15T Hoist) with Jib not rated. e.Employees lift steel by jib cranes, and the Storage Track (overhaul) had a pendant operated crane (15T Hoist) with Jib not rated. f.Employees lift steel by jib cranes, and the Steel Shop had a pendant operated crane without any rating identifying weigh limits of crane. g.Machine Shop Employees lift steel axles to set in place on metal lathes by jib cranes (four cranes) mounted on columns, and there were no rating on jibs (4) or the air cylinder hoists (4). h.Employees lift steel by jib cranes, and the Storage track at the Blast Area had a one ton hoist on a half ton trolley with no rating on jib. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THISHAZARD IS: 1. Ensure all jib cranes are properly marked with load limits. 2. That all maintenance and inspections are done on schedule and work on cranes completed. 3. An engineer should ensure that all load limits are correct on both jib and hoist.t
