Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to substantial risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne diseases: a. Jackson General Hospital - Nursing assistance required to clean feces from patients and nurses (RN's and LPN's) required to give patients injections of medication had not received hepatitis B Vaccinations, on or about March 17, 1992. Feasible and acceptable abatement methods among others, to correct this hazard are: 1. Provide Hepatitis B Vaccination. 2. Implement follow-up procedures after possible exposure to HIV or HBV. 3. Provide adequate training and education on topics such as, but not limited to precautionary measures, modes of transmission and prevention of HIV and HBV. Training on the location, proper use and limitations of personal protective equipment. Employees hsall be trained on proper work practices and the concept of universal precautions. They should be trained on the wearning of color coding or other methods used to designate con- taminated articles or infectious waste. Workers shall receive training about procedures to be used if they are exposed to needlestick or to body fluids. (post exposure evaluation and follow-up)
