Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard to the hazard of severe burns from improperly guarded laser beams: (a) In the two laser rooms the working point of lasers used to etch ceramic boards was accessible to employees. Inadvertent start-up of the laser while employees load or unload boards from the tray could result in serious burns to the fingers/hands. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to interlock the units to prevent activation while the access doors are open. The interlock mechanism should be designed and installed in accordance with ANSI std. Z136.1-1986.
