Section 5 (a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: On
or about 4/3/87 the employer did nto furnish employment and a place of
employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or
likely to cause death or serious harm to employees in that employee were
exposed to:
The hazard of serious crushing injuries from dropping hydraulic
automotive lifts while working under vehicles on the lifts, because
safety locking devices (dogs) were not provided, not used or not in
working order on thirteen (13) of fourteen lifts in the repair shop.
One feasible and acceptable method, among others to correct the hazard,
is to:
a- Reinstall any missing mechanical safety locking devices (dogs) and
repair those not in operative condition.
b- Instruct and train employees in the proper use of mechanical safety
locking devices for hydraulic lifts.
c- Conduct periodic inspections of the lifts an recommended by the lift
manufacturer to insure that the safety locking devices and all other
components are in safe operating condition, remove defective lifts
from service until rendered safe to operate.
d- Post manufacturers operating manuals in the shop lift areas.
